NFF club

NFF is is one of the hottest venues in Bremen, with the finest house and electro music. Comfortable seats invite you to chill while video presentations on many screens provide you with an optical relaxation. The dance floor offers some great tunes provided a powerful sound system. Often there are guest DJs from all around Europe.

Airport pick-up registration

Dear Students,

In co-ordination with our fellow student advisors and volunteers, we are happy to announce that the Airport pick-up service will be available for you the day you arrive in Bremen. This service is available for all incoming students of Jacobs University at the Bremen Airport free of charge. (Graduates and Undergraduates)

Your Semester Ticket (local transportation pass) and student ID will be delivered to you at the Jacobs University Welcome Desk in the Airport, where student advisors will be waiting to welcome you and bring you campus by local trams and trains.
Your luggage will be brought separately by a Jacobs University van, shuttling between the Airport and Jacobs University.
This service running times will be announced soon.
Please register for this service. Keep in mind that you can still use it without registering, but you will have to pay for your own transportation to the university, as your semester ticket will not be provided to you at the airport.

If you are arriving by train to Bremen Hauptbahnhof (central station) you can also register to be picked up.

Registrations for O-week 2011 will open towards the end of July.

Stuphs.com is a free online market website designed by Jacobs University students for the students and other members of the Jacobs Community. It provides an user-friendly platform for buying and selling stuffs like couches, books or other daily commodities. All you need is a valid Jacobs University e-mail address to register and start doing business. However, you can ALWAYS take a look over the stuphs without log-in.
Features include a search engine with category filters, RSS and e-mail subscriptions for your favorite products, a facebook app to check the most recent stuph, your own stuphs shop, your own mailbox and many others. It’s all easy! Just visit www.stuphs.com and do not forget to register with the Jacobs e-mail address provided in your welcome package.

Moving In - Helpful Hints

When you arrive in Bremen you will probably have a lot of luggage, especially if you are coming by car. Here are some tips and tricks on how to get them into your room and where to get help if you run into trouble.

Keys: You will receive two keys and a transponder. The tiny key is for your mailbox, located in the basement of the IRC. The standard size key is the key to your room and to your locker, a storage space you can use in the basement of your college. Your student advisers will show you how to use the transponder and keys as they guide you to your room.

Elevators / Lifts: Every college has a lift which students can use. In Krupp, Mercator and College 3 the lift is located next to the servery. In College Nordmetall the lift is located in the so-called Cube. If you stand in front of the college, looking at the garden, the Cube is the part of the building on the right.

Trolleys: All colleges have trolleys which students can borrow. They can be very helpful when moving bulky or heavy items. To borrow a trolley, talk to your college office. The college office is located next to the quiet study area (in Nordmetall it is on the top floor of the Bridge, in the other colleges it is on the third floor above the common rooms). During the beginning of the semester many students want to use the trolleys, so you might have to wait until you can use one. Please return the trolleys immediately after you are done using them.

Lockers: You have a personal storage space in the basement of your college (you might want to store your suitcase there). You can access it using your room key. Students are allowed to leave their belongings in their lockers over the summer, so you might find that your locker is filled with someone else's stuff. The student who lived in your room the year before will usually contact you to arrange a time when you can open the locker for them so they can move their stuff.

Bikes: If you are bringing along a bike, feel free to use the bike storage rooms located in the basement of your college (unfortunately this is currently not available in Nordmetall).

Need help? Your student advisers are there to answer any questions you have during your first days at Jacobs. If you can't reach them, there are many other people who can help you. Feel free to talk to your college office (the opening hours are displayed on the doors, but often you can also find someone there outside these hours) where you can get advice and borrow tools (they can also help you out with a few nails etc), games and sports equipment. If you run into problems you can also talk to a resident associate (RA).

Locked out? Luckily at Jacobs there is help available if you locked yourself out. First of all, you should try and contact your room mate. Because you can only lock yourself out of the apartment, not your individual room, they will be able to help you. If you can't get in touch with them, follow these steps: If it's during the day, go to the college office. The College Office Manager (COM) can help you. If the college office is unattended, contact the RA on duty (signs displaying the RA on duty can be found throughout the colleges). Do not contact any of the other RAs because only the RA on duty has a master key. If it's late at night, please contact the porters. Please be aware that all the people who can help you have a lot of duties, so you might need to wait for a while.

Important Information

Contracts:

Do not sign any agreement or contract that you have not thoroughly read and understood. Even German-speaking students must remember to read the fine print!
No contract must be signed immediately. Legitimate contracting parties will often allow at least 24 hours for you to think things over. If you are pressured to sign a contract immediately, then you should be very suspicious.

Internet purchases:

Never submit the secret PIN number to your credit card. If a website asks you for this number, then it is not a legitimate website.
Be cautious when signing contracts with companies that advertise free incentives for signing (for example, a phone company that advertises worldwide free SMS texting). No company gives their product away for free, and these companies often make their money back by charging exorbitant fees over long periods of time (which are only mentioned in the fine print of the contract). Unfortunately, these contracts are still legally binding.

Bank accounts:

Bank accounts must contain sufficient funds for all withdrawals. Insufficient funds result in monetary penalties which, if they remain unpaid, accumulate into debt.
For example, after two months of insufficient funds, health insurance coverage is terminated, and if large amounts of debt are accrued, students may lose their student visas (permits to live in the country).
Bills must be paid by their stated deadline and if the money has not been received by that deadline, you will receive an overdue notice or warning letter in the mail.
If you receive an overdue notice, respond immediately! With every overdue notice, the amount of money owed only increases and: 1st overdue notice -> 2nd overdue notice -> action taken by a debt collector = enforcement under the law -> legal action in the form of a lawsuit = conviction of a crime -> the loss of your student visa (permit to live in the country)!

Health insurance:

Health insurance is very important, as an unforeseen accident can generate tremendous costs. Without insurance, a ride in an ambulance costs upwards of 200€, a stay in the hospital costs 300€ a day, and a stay in the emergency room costs 1500€ a day.
Students must ensure that their bank accounts contain sufficient funds for their health insurance even when they are away on vacation or at an internship. In worst case scenarios, terminated health insurance can also result in the loss of their student visas (permits to live in the country).

Mailbox:

Check your mailbox at least twice a week.
German authorities send letters, not e-mails, so if you receive a letter in German, make sure to have someone translate it for you.
If you are on vacation or away for a longer period of time, give your mailbox key to a trusted friend, as well as any information necessary for them to sign for your letters and packages (for example your first name, last name, birth date, nationality, and address). If you are still in Germany, you can also have your mail forwarded to your new address.

Students Confessions on Host Families

"When I first came to Germany I had a lot of questions about the culture and people here: even though there were people to help me on campus, I had no way of finding out how to deal with things outside campus, not in the very beginning at least, and that's when my host family helped me. They picked me up from the airport and helped me settle in on campus, helped me move all my atuff and were there for me whenever I needed anything. They come to the university events such as Eid and Spotlight and are interested in my life like my own family is. They often bring me gifts and invite me to dinner at their place too to make me feel at home. They are a family to me away from home. Even now, I am in constant touch with them and meet them at every opportunity I get, because spending time with them is a treat in itself." - Nayab

"I was well aware of the impact host families have on students at Jacobs, but I didn't know how much I would end up caring for them. It was with thier help that I discovered and understood German lifestyle and culture. It all started with an introductory email and continued with their visits to the university, invites to their home, even going out to clubs with my host brother's friends. I am extremely happy when I meet them and always proud to have them as my host family" - Seby

"I remember having a few chills last year as I stepped down at the Bremen airport. Even though I knew I would be greeted by a dozen of hearty Jacobians, I was tensed. I was going out for the first time. I was all alone and I had no know-about of the place. For the very first time in my life, I wished I had a guardian by my side. And it was.. that very instant that I saw Astrid and Manni, aka my host parents. They had a warm and joyous smile on their face. They seemed happy, excited, and were accompanied by flowers for their host daughter. I remember how I stood still for a moment like a complete moron. I just didn't expect them.
And well, from the first time when we met at the airport to now as I write about them, I cherish every single moment spent with them. Celebrating festivities together on-off campus, checking out new places to eat, sight-seeing, having dinner at their place, getting to know more about each-other's culture, cheering for my little cheerleader sister, cheering for Manni during soccer matches and what not, all of them were truly worth it.
The most memorable of them all was at Christmas. Though I had heard a lot about Christmas, I didn't know how it was actually celebrated in German households. After having a lovely dinner, I remember sitting down quietly as the members of the family exchanged gifts and unwrapped them. I agree, I did feel a bit out of place for those tiny moments which didn't last that long. Each and every member of the family had some or the other gift for the new one. It was touching. Indeed it was. The whole night was spent singing carols, talking, discussing, and getting to know one-another. They truly gave me a sense of belonging which I guess is the very essence of this program.
Now when I pack my bags again leaving my friends and family here in India.. I know that I would be going to Germany to a whole clump of friends.. and Family :) " - Rashi

"The freshmen year at Jacobs has been from intensenly intense to completely insane and from incredibly dull to outrageously fun. When I think about all these roller coaster times that I have had, there is one thing that I cherish more than anything else about Jacobs i.e. My HOST FAMILY! I first had the chance to meet up with them at the all-university barbeque during o-week. A very excited Hanna welcomed the equally excited me and introduced me to her husband Klaus and their 17 year old son Julian. Hanna is a high school teacher and her husband Klaus, the administrator of the town of Bremen Neustadt. Julian happens to be a talented guitarist and plays along with a local Jazz band. The whole experience with my host family has truly been full of cherishable moments. From attending live musical performances of Julian to exploring Bremen with Hanna, I have had a lot of interaction with my host family and the German culture at large. The most memorable time I spent with them though was at Christmas. Staying over at their house for 4 days, I had celebrated my first real Christmas. The presents, the dinners, the cookies, the movies and hours of stimulating debates about the present situation of Pakistan and Germany meant a great chance for me to indulge closely with the lifestyle of my Host family and understand their viewpoints while simultaneously telling them mine. I and Hanna even took out this time to cook some Pakistani food for the family who truly enjoyed the South Asian spices. I was also pleasantly surprised when my Host family decided to visit me on my Birthday and bring me a cake that Hanna had baked herself. It was truly the sweetest thing that had happened to me in a while. In short, being away from home, these littlest things make you very emotional. And it is in times like these that you need a sense of belonging and a sense of emotional support, which is, in my honest opinion the very essence of the Jacobs Host Family program. The thing that has been truly remarkable about this whole experience is the realization about how similar the people are around the world, and how many opportunities are out there if we decide to come over our differences and actually communicate." - Ehsaan

We, the students of Jacobs University Bremen, are very happy to welcome you among us. Right now you must be very excited and curious about the new experiences awaiting you in Bremen, a new city for many of you, and on our campus.

That is why we organized a group of Student Advisors who will be there before and during the O-Week to answer ALL the questions you might have and to help you acclimate and feel at home in your first few weeks in Bremen. Your personal advisors will get in contact with you probably in the first week of August. Should you have any questions or concerns until then, or you want to find more information about the O-week and the preliminary schedule, feel free to write us an email at oweek@jacobs-university.de. The O-Week schedule is not final and will be will be updated regularly over the summer.

Right now, people in Bremen and all around the world are very busy preparing your Orientation Week. In your first week at the Jacobs University you will get to know your fellow students, college life, the administration and everything concerning academics, sports, and the campus.

We will also offer you a workshop that will give you tips for adjusting to this new environment and to thrive in our multicultural community. As we are all very proud of the diversity of our international student body with students from more than 80 different countries, we hope that you will help us enrich social and cultural life at Jacobs University. Facilities/Buildings on Campus

Student Service Center: The SSC (Reimar Lüst Hall) is there to help students with all kinds of things. If you receive a parcel you can pick it up there, you can buy stamps or post your letters. They help you with questions regarding the host family or make phone calls in German for you and have information about local events.

The Pulse: (SAC, Student Activity Centre between East Hall and West Hall) Here you can buy readers for your courses, make copies, get your semester ticket and student ID laminated and buy all sorts of food, drinks and other things one might suddenly need (toothpaste…). Pulse is open daily from 7pm to 1 am, weekends included! ;)

Campus Center/ IRC: In the Campus Centre you will find the library aka the IRC (Information Resource Centre). You can check out books and place Interlibrary Loans (ILL). here There are quiet study areas and group discussion areas too. If you need to print large posters you can use the plotters in the IRC. Our mailboxes and the Language labs are in the basement.

Language Lab: If you want to understand and speak over 20 languages and you don’t want to pay for courses then language lab is a place for you! Located in the basement of Campus Centre/ IRC, it consists of several computers with about 150 language programs for self-learning. It’s open anytime the IRC is open and it’s absolutely free!

Porters: The porters are at the main gate of the university. If you have problems with your keys/ transponder you go to them and they will help you. You can also find the timetables of all important buses there. That’s also the only place on campus where you can put money on your cash card.

Cinema: The name says everything for itself! Located in the building behind the SAC our campus cinema is not only a perfect place to watch both new and classic movies that are being screened there by the members of Movie Magic Club several days a week, but it’s also a place where a lot of big university events take place.

Music Room: If you decide to become a member of a Music club you will gain access to the music room which can be found right next to the cinema. There you will be able to practice your skills in any of the available music instruments (guitars, piano, drums, etc.) without anyone disturbing you and anyone being disturbed by you.

Sports halls I&II: Located next to the soccer field two big sports halls are there for all the sport fans in the JUB. Basketball, volleyball, badminton – anything you can think of. It is being renovated currently, and the management has very optimistic plans for it.

Recreation Center: Located outside campus (5 minutes walk); contains a wide range of gym gear and for 15 € per semester is the perfect place to burn some calories. More information you can find here.

Swimming Pool: Is located just across the Jacobs Kindergarten and "The OtherSide" and for a semester fee of 20 € per semester is available for students three days per week at certain hours. For more information see here.

Interfaith house: Spiritual place for people of all religions and confessions. Right across the Campus Center and in between Researches I and II.

Its time to buck up and get started with the VISA process. It can quiet tedious at times and depending on your country of origin and stay, the visa process can take between 2 days and over a month. Its best to be safe, and apply early.

Do you need a Visa?

As an international student coming from outside the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand or USA, it is necessary to get a German student visa from a German Embassy PRIOR to entering Germany.

Important Documents

You generally need the following documents:

Proof of enrollment ("Immatrikulationsbecheinigung")

Proof of sufficient funding

Proof of health insurance valid in Germany

Visa Process

The Visa process differs from country to country. In some, you might need to go through an official interview. In others, you’ll just need to submit your application with necessary documents. It can be fast or slow, depending on your consulate. A list of German embassies can be found here. Contact the respective consulate for more information.

Visa and Residence Permit

The initial Student Visa which is granted by the German Embassy is valid upto 3 months from the time of issue (it permits you to enter Germany). Soon after coming here, you’ll have to apply for a Residence Permit ("Aufenthaltsbewillingung") at the Foreigners' Registration Office ("Ausländerbehörde") on campus. You will be given more information about how to apply during your O-week.

Sushi Factory

The Sushi Factory in Bremen is a combination of a traditional Katien Sushi Bar and a sushi restaurant. It is located right in sight of the famous "Bremer pigs", in direction of the pedestrian zone and is in proximity of the local scene. Its location makes it a perfect sushi on-spot for strolling passer-by's.

If you like sushi.. you would love this place. Crabs, jellyfish, tuna, shrimps, salmon, squid,.. you name it - and you get it all! Not just the food, but then their drink's collection is quite extensive as well.

Its athmosphere is also just right. Both the classic bar stools and the cosy tables right there on the conveyor belt accounts up for the perfect place to savour food. If you are running out of time and you want to grab quick sushi, try one of their take away boxes. From a small box that serves a person to the party bok that serves several, to any kind of take away request that you might have.. they have something in for everyone!

So just go and devour into their awesome sushi factory.. it's totally worth it for sushi-fans!

Gul Imbiss

Gul Imbiss is surely one of the best places to grab a Doner. It is located just at the Vegesak Bahnhofplatz and has been standing tall since 1996. The snacks there are always fresh, delicious, and of best quality. Be it Doner, Kebab, Pizza, Fries, or a Rollo, you just cannot complain for one. Moreover, you can also relish their Turkish Tea while lingering around for free!

Their clientele accounts 80% of the regular customers and you would almost always encounter a fellow Jacobian around. Gul Imbiss comes easy on your pocket and is very customer friendly.

College Nordmetall is the newest and the largest residential college on campus

It offers living space to more than 250 students
It opened its door to the first batch of students in January 2009
Formerly known as Collegee IV, it officially became College Nordmetall on April 29, 2009 in honour of the employers' association NORDMETALL, whose donation made this 16-month long project possible
The city of Bremen was also involved in the financing of the new college
Cost: 15 million Euros
91 single and 83 double rooms, 270 beds
Current population: 65 students.
Architect: Boge Lindner, Hamburg
The architects "Boge Lindner" located in the city of Hamburg were in charge of the construction project. They were already awarded for their successful re-development of the former Roland-Kaserne Barracks into the present Jacobs University campus.
The college has 83 double apartments and 100 single apartments. College Nordmetall also offers, just like the other three colleges, recreational facilities. These include: a huge common room complete with table tennis, air hockey, fussball, pool and darts; a state of the art multimedia room; a dance room and a picturesque garden.

The first batch of students moved into College Nordmetall in January 2009 while several parts of the building were still under construction. They named themselves the "College IV Pioneers". The pioneers together with the highly committed college office team, supported the ongoing construction, brought life into the new college and shaped it for future generations of students.

The Host Family Program

What is it?

The Host Family Program of Jacobs University is designed to ease the transition of new students to living in Germany. It is a non-live in situation aimed to promote cross-cultural understanding by fostering interaction between the students and the residents of Bremen. The individual relationships between the families and the students involve social get-togethers, outings, meals, phone calls, and companionship. Many students develop relationships with their host families that last for years after they graduate.

What to expect?

Your local host family provides you with a home away from home. They may call you over for meals, invite you to family events, give you an opportunity to periodically get away from campus on weekends and some would welcome your family when they visit you in Bremen. Other activities could include attending a cultural or sporting event, attending picnics, observing holidays, going to movies, or shopping together. Activities shared depend on the interests of the host family and the student.

Host families are single or married persons who desire to know more about the Jacobs international community and the diverse countries and cultures. Jacobs recognizes the importance of matching you with a family with whom you are comfortable with and so we request you to kindly complete the Host Family Survey.

Viertel

The Viertel (Quarter) is the area of Bremen where all the alternative pubs, clubs, bars and artsy shops are located!

Bremen is famous for being a more or less “left” city (speaking in political terms), thus most of the places in the Viertel have a liberal and chilled atmosphere. When the nights are warm, most young people that hang out in the Viertel, actually just sit outside on the streets. What is the average budget per month of a Student living at Jacobs?

The typical budget seems to be around 150 Euros. But this can vary depending on how much one likes to spend on foods, drinks, shopping and travel. Expenses are always higher at the beginning of the semester due to initial settling expenses such as clothes to fit the weather, extra furniture and decoration for one's room, text books and readers, paying for one's residence permit, etc.

What is the cost of basic necessities like printing, cleaning supplies, and laundry?

Printing is free in the residential colleges and research buildings. Some colleges has colour printing facilities at a very low cost. One is expected to bring one's own paper - you can buy paper for 4 euros at Pulse Express (a convenience-store located in the Student Activity Center on campus) or in any department/stationery store in the mall.

Major cleaning supplies (broom, mop, vacuum cleaner) should be located in one's floor kitchen. As it is commonly used by all floor members, it is the duty of every floor member to maintain these supplies. Other cleaning supplies (trash bags, room fresheners etc.) can be purchased at any local supermarket.

All residential colleges are equipped with laundry machines and driers. They are located in the basement of each block. Laundry costs 1 Euro and drying costs 50 cents.

Are there any ‘unexpected expenses’ that come up in the year that I should expect?

One will definitely have to buy a LAN cable at the beginning of the semester. It can be purchased at the electronics store in the mall or from other students who might be selling their spare ones.

Will I have to pay for the meals that I do not eat?

Yes, this is a university policy. The fee for board is paid once each semester and it is non refundable irrespective of our consumption.

What exactly does the Room and Board Cost cover?

Room and Board covers your room, and all cafeteria (aka servery) meals. It also covers electricity, internet, water, maintenance and most basic amenities.

What is the typical cost of books and readers?

The price of a reader depends on its size. They can be purchased at the Pule Express and generally the prices range between 10 Euros and 30 Euro. Oftentimes, 2nd and 3rd year students sell their old readers at much cheaper prices. (But keep in mind that sometimes professors change the content and the latest one needs to be purchased)

Text books come in wide range of prices. New books can range from 80 or 100 Euros, but these also can be bought second hand from other students or from second hand websites at cheaper prices. One must regularly check one's Jacobs e-mail for emails and ask second and third years from to get the best deal on books.

Oftentimes books can just be checked out from the library. Course books (i.e. those related to specific classes) are kept on reserve, i.e. they need to be returned within four hours of borrowing, for the convenience of all students

The Cinema

The Cinema is directly diagonal (to the right) from the Hauptbahnhof. It offers a pretty big variety of films. On Mondays they screen the original film in the original language. So if you want to see a movie in english for example be sure to check out the Monday schedule. Tickets are about 8 euros per person, and then snacks tend to be pretty expensive, so save up a bit for a movie night!

If you want to know what's on this week, search the program for a movie title ending with "OV" ("original version"). If it's a popular film, they often have screenings on days other than Mondays.

Which Airport is the best to choose when coming to Jacobs?

You can come directly to the Bremen Airport in which (if you sign up on time) you can pick up your semester ticket and get to Jacobs free through public transport. Student advisors will be at the airport to show you the way. You can also fly into nearby airports like Hamburg or Dusseldorf and take a bus and then train to get to Bremen Hbf (Hauptbahnhof – Main Station). If you ask at these airports (they all speak English) how to get to Bremen Hbf, the directions will probably entail taking a bus from a certain platform (which they will specify, and could cost from 2 to 5 Euro) and this bus will take you directly to Hamburg Hbf or Dusseldorf Hbf (Main Station); from there you will have to buy a ticket to Bremen Hbf, which can cost between 20 to 30 Euros. From there you can get a student advisor to pick you up and show you the way.

You actually can fly into any of the major airports and either get a cheap connection flight from one of the websites above or take a train.

Can I use a train to get to Bremen?

Yes, of course, unless you have a large body of water between your country and Germany you can definitely take a train, although it may not be cheaper than getting a connection flight. Check flights and train options before you book. Also you will have to make train connections, if you have never taken the train it may seem scary but just look at the platform numbers where you get off and where the next platform is in your itinerary. Even with a big bag (or several) you can usually make connections in 10 or 15 minutes.

Once I am in Bremen what is the best way to get to Jacobs?

Your lovely semester ticket! The once-a-semester fee you are forced to pay for this little piece of paper will definitely be worth it, if you use it! With the semester ticket you can use all the regional trains and get to exciting locations like Hamburg, Osnabrück, Hannover, Bremenhaven, and Leer. But in the end it all comes down to the amount of time you have to go on trips, your preferences and your major. You just have to organise your time efficiently and choose your destination in time so you can get cheap offers. If you really intend to travel more inside Germany, outside the region covered by your semester ticket, than a Bahn Card would be really useful to you. Just check the back of your ticket for the lines you can take. It also lets you take all of the Bremen buses and street cars. So getting around will be no problem. You also use your Semester ticket to get to Vegesack, where you can buy all basic and immediate necessities.

Should I buy a bike?

Well you can, for relatively reasonable prices, but it is not necessary. With your semester ticket you will have no problem getting around, but if you like riding a bike and would prefer this form of transport for around campus or to go to the park close by, you can get a second hand bike via spams (mass emails sent to all Jacobs students) for somewhere from 35 to 75 Euros. There is also a Bike shop close to campus which sometimes has good deals.

Jacobs campus is not too terribly big, you can get all the way around walking in 15 minutes or less. The most common way to get around is definitely by foot, but bike is also a nice alternative.

Do I need a German health insurance?

Students in Germany are required to provide the university with a proof of a German public health insurance. Students who decide to keep their private insurance in Germany or any other country must apply for the dispensation of the obligation to insure and must provide the Registrar's Office with the appropriate proof of their private health insurance. For the EU students special regulations may apply.

When should I apply for health insurance?

It is recommended that students out of Germany apply for travel insurance covering the first two weeks of their stay. Jacobs University then provides students with the opportunity to apply for health insurance on campus, during orientation week.

Via Car
In case you are renting a car, it takes around 30 minutes to get from the Bremen airport to the Jacobs University.

Head northeast Flughafenallee for 75 meters.
Turn right and merge onto A281 and drive for 1700 meters.
Take exit 6-Bremen-Neustadt towards B6.
Keep left at the fork to continue towards B6 and merge onto B6. Drive for about 6000 meters.
Enter the Autobahn A27 in the direction of Mülldeponie, Bremen‐Nord and stay there for 10 kilometers.
Leave the A27 at the gateway 16 which is in direction of Bremen‐Burglesum, Bremen‐Vegesack.
Drive onto the B74 and stay there for 900 meters.

Leave the airport and stay on the Flughafenstrasse for 700 meters.
Drive right onto the Alsterkrugchaussee (B433) and stay on the road for 4 kilometers. The streetname will change into Rosenbrook and Tarpenbekstrasse.
Drive right onto the Lokstedter Weg and stay on the street for 4.5 kilometers. The street will change its name various times, however once you are on the Kieler Strasse, enter the Autobahn A7 on the driveway Hamburg‐Stellingen (26) in the direction of Hannover and Bremen. Stay on the A7 for 20 kilometers.
On the junction Ad Dreieck Hamburg‐Südwest/33 (1) change from the A7 to the A261 in the direction of Bremen, Tötensen. Stay on this Autobahn for 9 kilometers.

You can find buses that will take you to Hamburg’s main station in front of both Terminal 1 and 2. The buses going to Hamburg main station are from the company JASPER and are yellow and red. They run every 15 minutes. Tickets can be purchased inside the buses and cost 5 euros for a single fare and 8 euros for a roundtrip. The trip to the central station takes 20 minutes.

Via Car
The kilometer distance from Hamburg airport to the central station might seem relatively short and is less than 10 kilometers; however the way to get there is quite complex and takes about 20 minutes.

Leave the airport and stay on the Flughafenstrasse for 700 meters.

Via Train
The airport shuttle lets you out directly in front of the central station. Enter it through the closest entrance. If you do not have a ticket yet, you will find the Reisezentrum to your right.
Using the machines in the middle you can choose the connection you wish to take to Bremen. These machines offer you a variety of languages including English for you to make the procedure easier. If you are going directly to the Jacobs University, you should type in Bremen‐Schönebeck as your destination.

There are 2 possible train connections on how to get from Hamburg central station to Bremen central station.

The Metronom train which leaves alternating every hour at 15 or 16 past, takes 1 hour and 13 minutes and costs around €18.30.
The IC train which leaves hourly at 46 past, takes 55 minutes and costs about € 22.00.

Bremen Airport to Bremen Hauptbahnhof

Via tram
Tram tracks which will take you to the Bremen Hauptbahnhof can be found 22 meters away from the check‐in terminals at Bremen airport. To get to the central station you have to take Tram line 6 in the direction Universität which leaves every 10 minutes. The tickets can be purchased on the tram and cost € 1.95 for a single fare. It takes around 17 minutes to get from the airport via tram.

From Bremen Hauptbahnhof to Jacobs University

Via train
When you enter the central station you can find ticket machines directly to your left and right. To buy a ticket to the university, you need to use one of the machines with the many buttons on them. Press the buttons 180 (the code for Bremen‐Schönebeck, the train station closest to the
university) and pay the ticket fare which is €2.50. Before getting on the train you have to stamp your ticket in the small blue machines on the platform to make it valid.

You have to take the train to Bremen‐Vegesack which leaves every 30 minutes from platform 5, at 11 and 41 past each hour. To get to the university you have to get off at the train station Bremen‐Schönebeck, which is the 6th stop. The train ride takes approximately 20 minutes. The walk from Bremen‐Schönebeck to Jacobs takes about 10 minutes.

Via Taxi
A taxi can be found outside the front entrance of the Train Station. A taxi from hauptbanhof to the university will cost approximately 35 euros.

FAQ: Financial Aid by Jacobs Financial Aid Office

When will the tuition bills be sent to us?

The Student Financial Services Office will send you your bill when it confirms receipt of your enrollment deposit. These bills will contain the amount of tuition due plus the semester ticket fee and the university fee. The outstanding amount on this bill is then due by August 15th.

Could new students pay their bills with cash once they arrive at the university?

No, the deadline for payment is August 15th, which means you would have to pay before arriving on campus.

Is the 500 € enrollment deposit discounted from the Expected family contribution?

The enrollment deposit is no longer discounted from the Expected Family Contribution. It will be placed on a separate account until you graduate from or leave Jacobs University. You will need to pay your entire Expected Family Contribution and fees before registering for classes. You will receive an invoice when you receive confirmation of the receipt of your enrollment deposit.

What is welcome money?

Welcome money was a gift of 50 Euros to all new residents of Bremen. Unfortunately, this welcome money concept no longer exists.

In case of extreme financial hardship, would I have any chance of being excused from the enrollment deposit?

No, all incoming students are required to submit an enrollment deposit and no exceptions are made to this policy. This deposit is refundable and returned after graduation.

How do you know your enrollment deposit has been received by Jacobs University after you make the payment? Do you get an email acknowledging this?

You will receive a confirmation by email from the Student Financial Services Office as soon as your deposit has arrived and been deposited by our staff. You will also receive your student bill for the first semester with this email. Please note that this might take some time.

I have the Financial Aid Package. What else am I suppose to pay for when I come?

Your expected family contribution, semester ticket fee and university fee are due by the 15th of August 15th. All new students will receive a bill of confirmation from the Student Financial Services once the enrollment deposit is received to confirm admission.

What is expected family contribution?

The expected family contribution is the amount you and your family are expected to pay to Jacobs University for tuition, room and board only (i.e. everything that has not already been covered by your scholarship and grant). The expected family contribution does not include additional expenses such as books, health insurance, laptop, etc.

I found out that we have to pay tuition and other expenses before arriving on campus. Does the enrollment deposit go into my account and will it be deducted from the total fee that I have to pay to the university. Eg: My expected family contribution is EUR 1000 annually and I have already payed EUR 500 as enrollment deposit. Do I have to pay only EUR 500 now or the whole sum of EUR 1000?

If your expected family contribution is 1000 Euros for the academic year, you will need to pay this 1000 Euros over and above the enrollment deposit of 500 Euros. The process of opening a bank account in Bremen may take a couple of weeks. In order to be able to sustain yourself and all initial expenses until this time, it is most safe to bring most of your money in the form of demand drafts. There’re several places within 10 minutes of the university, such as Haven Höövt (mall) in Vegesack and Plus (supermarket) on Schoenebecker Strasse. Students can also go a bit further to downtown Bremen where there’re a lot of shopping areas.

Do students have any transportation costs?

No. All students receive a "semester ticket" each semester (price included in the financial package) that allows them to take all the means of transportation within Bremen area (trams, buses). They can also take regional trains from Bremen to surrounding cities such as Hamburg, Hannover, Osnabrueck, Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, etc.

What type of activities do students pay for off campus?

No, certainly not, because for some people it’s enough to have the phone in their rooms or just use any chat software. However, sometimes you will have some urgent matters to discuss and taking into consideration the complex scheduling of Jacobs University it gets nearly impossible to manage it using the methods mentioned above. Moreover, the more friends you have, the more connected you might want to be, and the more you will need a mobile phone. You can bring a phone from home and purchase a local sim card or or buy the phone at any local distributor in Bremen.

What is the best SIM option for students?

There are several mobile phone companies which offer different call options for students (T-Mobile, O2, Vodafone, Simyo). There are various price ranges and call-sms packages to choose from. This is highly subjective and depending on the extent of usage, one can make their choice. Its best to take one's time, analyse the cost-benefit ratio of all packages and then choose the best contract

How can I talk to the people from home by phone? (Except them calling me)

One FREE alternative is www.peterzahlt.de, but the only disadvantage is that you can call from Germany only to the countries listed there. Another way is to go to The Pulse (the shop on campus) and grab a Go Bananas calling card which you can use with your room phone. You will be provided a code that will permit you to call people outside the campus. The third alternative is quite expensive but straight forward—you can call them from the mobile phone. The fourth alternative is to use Voice Over Internet Protocol. The connected can be obtained through the internet for one's mobile phone (this is probably the cheapest alternative). The last alternative is to use Skype calling (by loading one's account with some credit).

Can anyone call me on my room phone from the outside?

Yes, and in fact it’s quite easy. You have to dial: 0421 200 xxxx if you are in Germany and 0049 421 200 xxxx if you are calling from outside of Germany. xxxx is the individual intercom number for the phone in your room. (There should be a sticker with your number on the phone in your room)

I know someone from the campus. How can I find his/her number?

This is very easy. You just go to http://ircitweb.irc-it.jacobs-university.de/ldap-search.php (Note: this website is only available under Jacobs internet connection). There you have the option to search for part of the person’s name, campusnet username, Jacobs e-mail, room number if member of the faculty. This search is also good in case someone calls you and leaves you a message and you don’t know whose number it is; then you can search for the number on LDAP. Note: you can only do this when you are connected to the internet on campus or signed in via VPN.

Do I have to be able to speak German to go off campus on my own?

No, Germans often understand and speak some English. But if you feel better to go off campus with someone, just ask a German speaker or your host family to accompany you.

Do I have to learn German?

It is highly recommended to learn the language as it is a useful asset to have. Some majors make it a mandatory requirement but for the others it is your decision.

What other languages can I learn besides German on campus?

Spanish, French, Russian and Chinese courses are offered at Jacobs. The language lab in the basement of the IRC (library) is equipped with a language lab, where you can learn over 20 languages through self-study. It is highly recommended to learn a language at Jacobs.

Are there languages barriers on campus?

Every student is required to have TOEFL level English, and every member of staff is fluent (i.e. administration, professors, RAs, etc.). Sometimes interacting with catering, cleaning or gardening staff may require some German. However they are very friendly and facilitate communication with their broken English. But it always useful to speak the local language.

Some basic German may be required for off campus interaction. In order to work off-campus knowledge of German is indispensable and always considered an asset.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a grant?

Scholarships are need-blind and based on one's academic achievements. Grants are awarded based on one's family’s financial situation. Reimbursement of the grant and/or scholarship is not expected.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

Every student applying for admission will automatically be considered for these merit-based scholarship/awards. There is no need for a separate scholarship application.

What types of scholarships are offered at Jacobs?

The admissions office determines the scholarship amount that a student receives as a reward for his/her academic excellence. The different kinds of scholarships are:

Full scholarship: covers all expenses (room and board, tuition)
Part scholarships: variable amounts as judged by the admissions office
Private scholarships from other sources/sponsors are also recognized by the university.
Mid-semester scholarships: these scholarships are offered by external sponsors after arrival at Jacobs (they may be accepted and sourced by Jacobs)

Can I lose my scholarship?

All students are required to submit a financial aid renewal application for each year they attend Jacobs University. The Student Financial Services Office checks the GPA (Grade Point Average) of each scholarship recipient each year. If the GPA drops to 3.0 or lower, then the student may lose his/her scholarship. If any additional financial need is shown in the application, the student could receive a grant to cover all or some of the expenses.

Once the scholarship is lost, it cannot be regained.

Can I receive a scholarship during the course of my studies, if I haven’t received one upon arrival?

No, there is no scope for receiving a scholarship during your studies at Jacobs from the university. However, you are encouraged to apply for private scholarships. Example German students can apply for the SdW (Stiftung der deutschen Wirtschaft), German students with an immigrant background can apply for a scholarship from the Vodafone Foundation, etc.

Try the chicken or the vegetable dishes or opt for a fresh sea food dish. The portions are generous and the accompanying drink selections make a great supplement to the menu. Who doesn’t know Starbucks?

America’s favorite coffee place finally made it to Bremen and serves us mochas, cold coffee shakes, caramel frappuccinos , cookies, brownies, cheesecake and sandwiches and of course the usual merchandising products: cups and thermo buckets with the Starbucks logo.
Customers can take a seat on one of the fluffy chairs or sofas inside, listen to Jazz, sip on their Iced Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha and read the newspaper.There is even wireless lane inside, so you could bring your laptop and get some work done while drinking coffee.

The downsides: Starbucks is expensive, you have to stand in line for at least 5 minutes before you get served and often times it is so crowded that you can forget about getting a seat, not even mentioning studying.

The solution: Get a coffee to go and enjoy the sunshine outside with your friends J

A mexican restaurant/bar in Vegesack. It offers mexican food as well as a large variation of beers, cocktails and other beverages. This is a very fun place to go, to hang out with friends, have some enchiladas, or just relax. It is very nicely priced.

I really enjoy going to this bar because it is not far from campus, and it is open every day of the week. Also the bar’s atmosphere is really unique with exclusive Mexican decorations and a very juvenile ambient.

How many courses on average does a student take?

Well it mainly depends on which school (Sciences or Humanities) you are in, as well as your major. The number of mandatory courses you have to take in each semester is different accordingly (see the Handbook of the Major). Your load of courses also depends on how many other school electives and USCs (University Study Courses - interdisciplinary courses) you decide to take per semester. 7-8 courses in total is said to be an adequate amount, especially for the first semester, although the science majors have labs in addition to this. Each major has a recommended study plan which ensures an even workload (see the Handbook of the Major).

It is also advised not to overload yourself starting with your first semester, as it is the case with some of the very motivated students. This is because it may be difficult to make up for the failed courses in the following year (when you tend to have a tighter schedule) and it would a pity to dedicate all your time only on your courses and not take part in the University Events, which make our on campus life very cool and unique.

What if I decide to change my major after the first year? Is it possible?

Yes, it is possible for you to change your major in the 2^nd year. Some students after their first year, or even first semester decide to change their major within the same school, or even to the other school. This is one of the great advantages Jacobs offers you, as in your first year you are given the opportunity to take courses from both schools, which definitely helps those who are unsure of what to major in.

If you decide to change your major to the other school, you would have to make sure that you fulfill the requirements (mandatory courses) you have missed in the previous semester or year. This can be challenging yet not impossible.

How do I put my semester schedule together? How do I know which courses to take?

Most importantly, you have to make sure you are taking the mandatory courses of your major. Now for the rest of the courses, if you are unsure of what to choose, there is a so called ‘Drop/add period’ where you get to attend the lectures and seminars you are interested in.

You should use this period to attend as many courses you want to, in order to decide which ones you want to take.

Do we have an Academic Counselor/ Adviser like many of us did in high school?

Yes. You will be assigned with an academic adviser; a professor at Jacobs. The professor will not necessarily be the professor of your major, but most likely someone from the school you are in. They will answer your questions about course selections and general questions regarding academics. You will get acquainted with them during o-week. Please make sure that you schedule a meeting with him/her before University starts, so that you make sure that you took the right decision in choosing your courses and you sort out all your uncertainties regarding your major.

Am I allowed to take any language course that I want?

Yes. You would have to take a placement test in in order to prove your qualification though. Placement tests are also conducted to assess your level of knowledge and instruction for the particular language course (e.g. if student with basic German knowledge already wants to start with the intermediate level , he/she would have to give the basic level (A1) placement exam). The language courses that our University offers are German, Spanish, French and Chinese. The placement tests will take place during O-Week. Please see the schedule, for more information about how they are scheduled.

Its aim is to raise awareness as to what degree of mathematical competence is required for successfully completing the Computer Science Program at Jacobs University. In this respect, the pre-course wants to serve as a tool for self-assessment for potential students like you.

But the pre-course is not only about assessing one's skills in mathematics!Mathematics -- and thus also the CS pre-course -- is also fun. The topics covered in this pre-course are intellectually challenging, but this should only motivate you and deepen your interest in mathematical problems, including but certainly not limited to for instance the Bridges of Koenigsberg, the Towers of Hanoi, and many other fascinating puzzles and riddles.

Alex Bremen

The Alex is a chain of stylish restaurants/bars and this is their store in Bremen.

The restaurant is located around the corner of the historical marketplace and all the walls of the Alex are glass windows, so you have a very nice view from each of the three floors. Of course, the very best view can be enjoyed from the fourth floor, which is an open roof terrace and packed during warm summer days.

In my opinion, the Alex is more a café than a real restaurant: They offer warm meals, but those are usually rather light (such as noodles or burgers) and a big part of their menu consists of ice creams, different kinds of shakes and small soups.

Although the Alex is rather expensive (a plate of noodles with meat is about 9 Euro), it is worth going for the nice atmosphere – their decoration is very modern and if you manage to get one of the leather seats on the first floor, this is the place to go for a chat over coffee and snacks with your friends.

Chocolate Store "Cocolat"

This little chocolate store, almost hidden between two Turkish kiosks and not an obvious eye catcher at the very first glance, comes the closest to Juliette Binoche‘s dessert store in the French movie “Chocolat” as it can get.

I just stumbled over it by chance, when looking for a Christmas gift for my mother, and found the cutest location in Bremen.
You enter and are basically surrounded by delicious sweets from all sides: chocolates, but in forms in flavors you have never seen, dark chocolate, white chocolate, chocolate stuffed with dried fruits, chocolate combined with spicy chili, chocolate from Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and all parts of Africa. There are simple chocolate bars, small boxes of pralines and huge packets filled with toffees.

Directly under the counter you find little mountains of homemade truffles and a large collection of exotic coffees is displayed on the shelves (you can buy it either in whole beans or freshly grounded). Furthermore, the chocolate store features several other delicacies for lovers of the extraordinary: all sorts of tea, marmalade from Denmark, gingerbread from Sweden or English cookies! :)

As you can see in the pictures, all the sweets are beautifully and lovingly arranged, so the atmosphere is really cosy. The two elderly women who own the store are very helpful and always ready to recommend a certain kind of coffee or chocolate.

Unfortunately, everything in the shop is rather expensive – I think the cheapest chocolate bar starts at 3 Euro and you can easily pay up to 50 Euro for one of the huge boxes of high-class candy.However, if you are looking for a very nice and special gift, maybe for your parents or boy-/girlfriend, this is definitely the place to go. Or also if you just want to delve into the beautiful world of sweets like in the movie “Chocolat” :)

The Stubu is a pretty big club located near the Hauptbahnhof.

This club offers three different stories, and in each floor different type of music is played. House, hip-hop and rock are some of the variations the club offers.
It is a very fun place to go because it is big and airy and there are many music options to choose from. The decoration of the place is really cool.

All you need to remember to take is an ID (you need to be 18 or older to get in), and as well an entrance fee which for women is 5 euros and for men it is 8 euros on special occasions and 5 euros for both on normally.

How to get there:

From Hauptbahnhof, cross the traffic lights and walk left for about 3 minutes. You will recognize the Stubu from the large line standing in front of it.

VIP-Lounge

The local club here in Vegesack. If you want to get of campus for an evening out, and you don’t want to worry about how to get back in the middle of the night, the VIP-lounge is a good choice!

It is a small club, with a few sitting sections, and a dance floor. In addition to the possibility of buying alcohol, one can also rent a hookah (water pipe) for the evening, and try out different, exotic flavours of tobacco.(15 euros) The place is usually not overly crowded so it might be more fun if more people go together! It is a nice change from on campus parties!

How to get there:

Take either the 74 or 75 bus to the main bus station in Vegesack. Then pass the Imbisstreff, then cross the road, and on a brown brick building you can see the sign of VIP-lounge and El-Presidente.

Paddy's Pit

This is probably my all-time favourite place downtown. Paddy’s Pit is an Irish bar, and it is extremely cosy and chill! Here you can order lots of different beer, shots, and other drinks.

It is probably the place I have visited the most after coming to Jacobs. You can either stop by for a beer, or spend the whole evening there!

Thursday nights are student nights, and they have special offer on beer (a specific brand, 3 for the price of 2), and of you are into singing they have karaoke night every Sunday night! It is a great place to come and have a nice, relaxing evening!

The Loft

The bar the Loft is situated right above Paddy’s Pit, directly infront of the Hauptbahnhof. In contrast to Paddy’s, The Loft offers the same drinks as the Pit but with a different atmosphere. It is a more relaxed zone, with couches to chill on and chilled music. There is also a selection of cocktails to choose from.

Lila Eule

The Lila Eule is an alternative club, located in the Viertel.

It is an “underground” club that every weekend offers different types of music. This is perfect for people who want to hear different beats, and like the “alternative” atmosphere. The people that normally attend this club are very artisticky. The club is pretty small, but it has a suitable dance floor and a nice bar to chill around. On Thursdays the entrance is free, and personally this is the best day to go.

How to get there:

To get to Lila Eule you need to take a tram from Bremen Hauptbahnhof, either the trams 2 or 10 will get you there, and you have to get off at the stop called “Sielwall”.

Vapiano

Vapiano is a very nice and modern Italian restaurant/pizzeria, and the prices are exactly at the border between what a normal student is willing to pay for a meal and being too expensive. The atmosphere is very stylish; there are light wooden tables and chairs with green basil pots and oil and vinegar bottles on top, combined with red leather couches in one corner.

However, the most special thing about Vapiano is the way the food is prepared: It is cooked live right in front of your eyes at the huge counter where you also have to order. This way you can see all the fresh ingredients that you want to have on your pizza, salad or noodles.
And trust me, seeing and smelling the whole kitchen really increases your appetite! Since they don’t have too complicated but nevertheless delicious dishes, the maximum waiting time for your order is 10 minutes, at least from what I experienced.

My personal tip: Pasta “salsiccia con fichi” with spicy Italian sausage, figs and tomato sauce!

Bremen Transport

The German public transportation system is really easy to use.

In Vegesack what students normally use is the bus system. There is a bus stop (Taununstrasse) right outside the University by the Kindergarden. The buses come every ten minutes.To go to Bahnhof Vegesack, you can either take the 74,75 or 677. These go through the University all the time.

To get to Bremen the fastest choice is the train. Just walk out of the University and walk completely to your right hand side. You will get to Schoenebeck station. The trains to Bremen come every 30 minutes.

In Bremen it is also very easy to use the tram service. There are clear maps of where the trams go, and depending on which tram, the difference in waiting time differs.

You can go to the Bremen transportation webpage to see the bus and tram schedule for more information. The webpage also offers the routes of each tram, so you can take a look before hand to know which tram is useful for you.

Remember to always take you semester ticket with you, that way you don’t have to pay for a ticket! They usually check each train!

Topping-out ceremony for New College IV

On the 9th of July, 2008, Jacobs University members, guests and journalists celebrated the Topping-out ceremony of College IV, the fourth college where Jacobs University students live and learn. With the construction of the building, the number of college places on campus increases to approximately 900. College IV is planned to be ready for occupancy in January 2009.

College IV will be the fourth and largest college on campus of Jacobs University and will host about 270 students from different countries and fields of study. The construction of the fourth college is supported by the federal state government of Bremen that will invest 10 million euros in total over a period of two years.

College IV will contain 83 double apartments and 100 single apartments. As well as the students’ rooms, the college will include a dining hall, a lounge, a study room, a TV and leisure room, and the apartment for the College Masters. A new structural element will be the solar heater on the top of the house that should deliver a large part of the energy needs. The architects “Böge Lindner” located in the City of Hamburg are in charge of the construction project. They were already awarded for their successful re-development of the former Roland-Kaserne Barracks into the present Jacobs University campus.

What does it mean to you ?

Well this means that Spring Semester 2009 onwards, you will be able to choose accommodation in 4 instead of 3 colleges. It means that college III will not be the newest and the biggest college anymore. It also means that you will see a steady growth in the number of freshmen next year onwards.

Mercator College

Mercator College is one of the four residential colleges at Jacobs University Bremen . The It is a place for students to live and learn in harmony that currently hosts approximately 190 students from more than 40 countries. Mercator College has been given it's name to honour the Stiftung Mercator GmbH from Essen and the Stiftung Mercator Switzerland, based in Lucerne. In year 2002, these two foundations donated a total of EUR 6.5 million to the then International University Bremen for the renovation and construction of the second college. A year after the generous donation, Mercator College was officially dedicated on the 8th of April 2003. It is the second college on campus to be officially named. Krupp College

The Alfried Krupp College was the first of Jacobs University’s three residential colleges. It was funded by a 10 million DM contribution from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung which is where its name comes from. The Krupp-Stiftung is one of the biggest and most significant established foundations in Germany; supporting Jacobs from the very beginning.
The Alfried Krupp College is home to approximately 175 undergraduate and 8 graduate students representing various nationalities from all over the world. This is a brief introduction to the Student Government. For more detailed information, please visit their website. The Student Government in its current form is based on the undergraduate student constitution of Jacobs, which outlines the following organs:

Parliament

The Undergraduate Student Parliament consists of undergraduate student representatives from each college. There is one Member of Parliament for every 65 students, these are elected at the beginning of each academic year in September.

The parliament is the main representative body of all undergraduate students. Among other things the parliament appoints its president, secretariat, and committees; it also manages the student government budget, and establishes student policies towards the administration.

Internal Affairs Committee (IAC)

The Internal Affairs Committee is responsible for maintaining a good student life on campus. Among the three standing committees of the USG, it takes of all the Internal university matters ranging from student events or competitions to student services and IT infrastructure. The committee meets with University Administration regularly and works in close cooperation with the Campus Activities to ensure the presence of a healthy housing environment. Among the most important responsibilities, The Orientation week for the incoming freshmen is also jointly organized by Internal Affairs Committee.

Academic Affairs Committee (AAC):

The AAC is responsible for representing the interests of undergraduate students to the administration and faculty in academic affairs.Along with the Secretariat and President,they meet regularly with the university’s leadership and faculty representatives to discuss academic policies at Jacobs. The AAC also acts as a channel of communication between the students and the faculty for various course related issues and problems.

Financial Affairs Committee (FAC)

The FAC manages the student government’s budget and collaborates with the Office of Campus Activities and College Coordination to decide on the allocation of the clubs budget. Students who need money for any kind of activity benefiting the student body are encouraged to apply to them. For applications to the student government budget, the FAC can make decisions on its own for smaller sums.

Committee of Finance(CoF)

The purpose of the CoF is to represent the student body opinion and make decisions for those financial matters of the administration which concern the students (eg. Room&Board, Aramark, college funding, infrastructure).They are responsible for ensuring fair practice and providing student opinions in the university's financial matters. Regular meetings with the leadership ensures new policies, financial changes and campus-amenities.

Club Liaisons:

This committee deals with everything related to the organization, supervision and structural arrangements of clubs that belong to Jacobs University. It aims to enhance the "Jacobs experience" outside the classroom by providing an incentive to the organization of activities and clubs of all sorts. This year, the Department of Campus Activities and Intercultural Affairs have decided to work closely with the Student Parliament to give Club Liaisons a new revolutionary approach.

Internal Procedures Committee(IPC)

IPC assumed independence as a separate committee from the Internal Affairs Committee this year, the focus of the IPC was to firmly root the committee in the existent government structure. The IPC has facilitated easy access to facilities such as the Blue Lounge, Halle 3 and the BBQ for parties and events. There have been 10 successful Blue Lounge parties and 4 H3 parties over the last semester.All IPC members are well aware of all the internal issues relating to facilities on campus and also have access to a forum allowing them to voice their opinions relating to such issues.

Housing Committee (RAC)

The mandate of the Housing Committee is to allocate the rooms in the 3 residential colleges on campus. They are responsible to draft and update the policies that are followed for Room Allocation Purposes as and when changes in the university may call for such changes. Also with ongoing changes and the new college being built, there are ever new issues to be dealt with, and ever new matters to be resolved. The HoC deals with them for the students.

PR Task Force

It is the committee responsible for handling all the Public Relations work that the Parliament requires. Among many other things , this includes maintaining contacts in the Jacobs administration, publicizing events organized by the Parliament.

Student Court

All undergraduate students directly elect the Undergraduate Student Court at the same time as the Parliament. It consists of five members and accepts complaints from all members of the university community, usually related to infractions of the house rules or other conflicts between students.

It is always difficult to leave your country/home to go somewhere else for the first time. Apart from all the sentimental baggage, there is a big common worry amongst students - how can I pack all my life's necessities within a 20 kg weight limit?

Dos and Donts:

A common mistake we all make - "Let me take this along, JUST IN CASE" - and many such items remain unused. When you have a weight limit, scrap off that "just in case" and substitute it with "because I really need this" or "because I LOVE this".

Here's an ideal 20kg list:

1) Comfortable clothes for daily use:

Couple of pairs of comfortable jeans/pants/skirts
Comfortable t-shirts and shirts
Jumpers, sweatshirts, pullovers that keep you warm
Warm scarves

2) Going-clubbing outfits:
For all those who wish to enjoy the local party scene on campus or in Bremen, bring out those fancy outfits!
Guys: Smart jeans/pants and a couple of smart casual shirts
Girls: A nice dress, nice shirts and pants to suit the occasion

3) Formal dress:
While many students can do without this, it is always useful to have a smart suit or dress for formal events on campus. There will be occasions when you might wear it, such as theme parties, conferences such as BRIMUN, graduation, etc. If you have problems fitting it into your luggage, you can always purchase one here or carry your suit as cabin baggage in the suit bag ;) Don't want to get it ruined now, do we? (its always a good excuse)

4) Traditional Outfit:
Bring one set of traditional clothes. There will definitely be an event when you can put it to use. Don't want to miss out the chance to show off your pretty traditional costume isn't it?

5) Footwear:

A pair of comfortable rain-proof sneakers
A pair of formal shoes (to wear with formal clothes)
A pair of clubbing shoes/heels
A pair of really warm shoes/boots (which can be purchased here locally if you don't own one already)
A pair to wear in your room

6) Rain/Winter Jacket:
Always comes in hand because rain, cold, wind and snow is plentiful in Bremen. If you come from a warm country don't own a winter jacket already, rest assured. You can find really good jackets at reasonable prices here in Germany. (If you don't have a jacket already, it makes sense to buy one locally in Bremen - it will be built to protect you in the local weather conditions). Make sure you carry this on you even if it not cold.

7) Innerwear/socks:

Bring underwear and socks to last you one week (atleast)
Warmers and thermals (can be purchased locally)

8) Gym Clothing:

Gym pants and tees for the gymmers
Swimming suits and goggles for the swimmers

9) Make up:
For some students make-up prices in Germany may come across as a shock at first. It is best to bring along enough stock to last you for a month. Once you are acquainted with the local prices and brands, you can begin purchasing make up here.

10) Personal-care kit:
Can be bought locally. But bring your nailcutter, twizeers, etc. if possible. It takes no space whatsoever (remember to put it in your check-in luggage) and it is not hygienic to share these.

11) Toiletries:
Bring your first stock. Once you exhaust them, you can purchase everything at lovcal stores. Brands may differ but there is a wide choice available.

12) Bed Sheets:

Mattress cover - 200 x 90 cm
Blanket cover - 140 x 200 cm
Pillow cover - 80 x 80 cm

13) Towel:
Bring just one. But more locally.

14) Socket Converter:
Very important! Germany has the standard EU socket (check on google) If you come from outside the EU, bring a converter. You can normally find this in all airports.

These things are the ultimate survival items. The rest is optional.

Optional: Still with some space?:

15) LAN Cable:
You need this to connect to the internet. If you already have one, just bring it along (5m or more is recommendable)

16) The rest of your toiletries:
If you left out something from the "just in case" category.

17) Decoration:
Posters, pictures to put in the walls, etc are always great to start feeling at home in your room. Jacobs rooms are nice but they are plain white. Bring SOME of your stuff.

Here are some things you should buy locally:

1) Stationary:
Notebooks, folders, pens, staplers, punching machines etc. They are all cheaply available at the Euro-store.

2) Laundry Stuff:
Detergent, softeners, iron, ironing board etc. are available (in your residential colleges or can be purchased locally)

You have 20 kilos only ;) Use your discretion and use it wisely!

Where can I see a movie?

The Movie Magic Club (MMC) screens movies at least two times a week. You only have to subscribe to their list at the beginning of the academic year (they will send a spam through the Jacobs University list giving you the opportunity to do this) and you will receive their e-mails saying which movies they are going to show. All their movies can be watched at the Cinema (next to College Nordmetall, behind the SAC) and they usually start around 8 pm. Another alternative is the media room in each of the Colleges. Sometimes, College Office members may screen movies for all community members. You can find more information on the website of each college. Note that these may be spontaneous and not regularized as the activities of the MMC.

Where can I party?

Locations of parties can range from the basement of the colleges, Blue Lounge and GSA Lounge to students’ rooms or The Other Side. Keep an eye out for emails to be in the loop.

Where can we have a BBQ?

There is one just in front of Krupp terrace. However, you have to first book it. You can do this by completing the form you will find at the following addresses: BBQ.

You can also book a small barbecue from your College Office if the facilities are available.

I’m bored. What can I do?

If it’s a sunny day outside you can always spend it on the lush Campus Green. The chances are, there might be some event taking place somewhere around the campus so just check your Jacobs email. You can also play tennis, basketball, or soccer on the courts in front of College 3 (if weather permits) or just gather some friends and spend some fun time in the Common Rooms playing table tennis, Foosball or pool.

What do I do if I lose/damage my transponder?

If you lose/damage your transponder you have to send an e-mail to facility@jacobs-university.de or visit Mr Michael Kawecki (Reimar Lüst Hall) during office hours: Mon-Fri 7:45-8:15 am, Mon-Thur 1:30-2 pm. Who do I contact in case I need a new light bulb for the lamp in my room?

In case you need a new light bulb, you can contact either your College Office manager or a member of the College Office team.

Where do I find a vacuum cleaner/iron?

Every floor in all colleges should have a vacuum cleaner and iron in the kitchen. In case they are not there, contact your floor representative (they have a special placard on their doors stating that they are the floor representatives).

Where can I store my bike?

Students are advised to keep their bikes in the basement in the specially designed areas.

How is the grading system in the university?

the grading system is in a scale of 1 to 5 where 1.0 is the best grade you can get and then decreasing by 0.33 until 2.0 and so on until you reach 5 which is the worse grade you can get. Nevertheless in some subjects your grades are percentages (specially in the engineering school) but at the very end they will be transformed to the 1 to 5 grading system.

What is the grade to fail?

The grade or percentage in some cases to fail an exam of a certain class is determined by the professor of the class itself but the general failing grade is anything less than 4.33 e.g. 4.67 and 5.

What happens if I fail one subject?

Well it really depends. For some courses you have pre-requisite courses that you need to previously approve in order to be able to take the course so if you fail you would have to either not take the next course or get a pre-requisite waver in the registrar’s or take an exam at the beginning of the semester to prove that you can take the following course. If the course you failed is not a pre-requisite for any other course then you just take it in the next fall or spring semester depending on which semester it is offered.

How do I know which courses to take?

There is a recommended plan of courses for every major in the university though you should know that it is not mandatory is just a recommended way in which you should take your courses. Nevertheless in some engineering majors its really good to follow the plan because the courses are build upon the previous one so it would be very hard and in some cases even not possible to take a course if another one is not approved first. In the first year you shouldn’t take too many courses because it is way harder than you think it is so just take the necessary courses and then see how good you can deal with those first.

What is the other school elective that I am meant to take and those USCs?

Jacobs University has a transdiciplinary approach which means that you need to have a certain amount of courses from the other school (if you are in the social one then from the engineering and vice versa) in order to graduate at the end of your major. Nevertheless you should consider that in each school some courses are harder than others and if your major is already hard you shouldn’t complicate your life taking a really hard course and you should take something you like because otherwise you wouldn’t be interested in working for it. A USC is a university study course, a course that involves many subjects and that will teach you to work with students from different majors and learn things from the other majors that you normally wouldn’t. Again you need a certain amount of USCs to graduate at the end of your major.

Yes, there is a bar on campus besides the Jacobs Kindergarten. We call it the TheOtherside.

You can do so at the Pulse. There are some local restaurant that deliver to your room. Fliers are always found lying around at signboards or dinner tables.

Yes, we have Cheer Ups organized by the college office of each college where you can meet others, watch a movie, have some ice cream, cookies, coffee, juice and much more! Its a perfect stress-buster! If its exam time, look around for the cheer-up schedule!

At what locations is internet available?

There is internet access (LAN) in all students' rooms, in quiet study areas and some lecture halls. At the same time, there’s also wireless internet access in a lot of places around campus, including the library, lecture halls, quiet study areas, common rooms, campus green and research buildings.

Is there wireless internet available in the student rooms?

Wireless internet is available everywhere in College Nordmetall. In all other colleges, there is only wired internet (via the standard LAN port). Wireless internet is available in all common area, classrooms and other places as mentioned above though.

Are we allowed to setup routers for our own wireless network?

No it is not advised to have a router for internet access sharing in the rooms. This is a violation of the IT Policy that you would agree to abide by on your arrival. It tends to slow down the average internet speed in the colleges. However if its purely personal and in-room usage then it may still be ok.

What are some restrictions on student online activities?

Students are not allowed to use any peer‐to‐peer networking protocols or programs, and Torrents are also banned. If one uses a peer-to-peer network or any torrent sites for download, internet in that room (and if on wireless, the respective campusnet account) gets blocked.

How many internet access points are there in student rooms?

There’s only one! But if there are multiple computers in a room, it’s possible to set up a wireless LAN so internet access can be distributed to each computer.

How reliable is the internet access?

Very reliable. There may be some scheduled down times during maintenance, but they’re not that often and internet is available around the clock.

How important is Internet to life at Jacobs?

It’s one of the most important resources at Jacobs. It’s utilized for all kinds of correspondences between students, faculty, admin, for announcements, home works, research work, and scheduling of classes.

What kind of Sport facilities does Jacobs University have?

Jacobs University possesses 4 outdoor fields namely: one Volleyball field, one Soccer/Rugby field, one Basketball court and two Tennis court. You can also benefit from our large Sports Hall, which is currently being renovated and expanded. Soccer, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball and Cricket can be played inside here. You can play Table Tennis, Billiards and Table Soccer in the common rooms of the four colleges . For those interested in having an athletic figure Jacobs University has a Fitness Club with free-weights and exercise machines like: stationary exercise bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, elliptical trainers and bowflex machines. It costs 15 Euros per semester. In the vicinity of the University there is also a swimming pool that you can attend by buying a special season ticket at 20 Euros per semester.

What sport events are there organized at Jacobs University?

We have quite a lot of sport events here at Jacobs; however, let me name a few:

Jacobs Olympics—this is where students from Mercator College, Krupp College, College 3, College Nordmetall, and Graduates are challenged to win the Olympics Cup while competing at such disciplines as basketball, soccer, volleyball, tug-of-war, dodge ball, and cheer leading.
Jacobs Run—It is an annual mini-marathon held on campus. It comprises the 'Bambini Run' for children, the 'Kids 1km Run', and the 'adults Run' of 5Kms or 10Kms. This event welcomes both members from the Jacobs community as well as members from the local Bremen community.
Jacobs Fall Games - Comprises Table Tennis, Pool, Fussball (kickers), chess and darts. These are the annual indoor championships for participants university wide.
Inter-Continental Soccer Tournament —teams from Africa, America, Europe and Asia compete for the title of the Jacobs-world’s best soccer team.
Extreme day – a day when unconventional sporting is welcomed: obstacle triathlon, a foam mat of sliding games, trust fall and tightrope walk.
Beach Volleyball Tournament, Basketball Tournament

In addition to these events we can attend official matches and tournaments of our University’s Rugby team, Soccer team (male and female), Basketball team and Rowing team.

Is there any place I can jog?

Sure there is. Near the university you have Knoops Park. So all you have to do is put on your sports gear, plug in your earphones walk in the direction of the gate that leads to the bus stop Taunustrasse . There you turn left and go straight forward up to the place. It is about 5 minutes walk. When you happen to recognize the pictures below you can be sure you have reached Knoops Park. Happy jogging!

In general how is the quality of the food?

FOOD, heh, that is a tricky question. The first thing i heard about Aramark is that it is the catering company of Yale university, and obviously that made me really excited, as i thought that an Ivy League school's food cannot be bad. Unfortunately, it is not exactly true – the food quality in general is okay, there is a wide variety of different dishes from all over the world, there is always a salad bar with plenty types of vegetables; cheese, ham, fruits, spices are available – so initially it is fine. The problem is that despite the fact that we take different dishes, they somehow have a common flavour in them and after a certain point it can get boring. However, it is not as bad as it sounds, so don't worry you won't starve to death and frequently you will even enjoy the meals! And we have a pancake machine which can always save you.

How diverse is the food, is there something for everyone?

Everyone can find something to eat – whether you are a vegetarian, cerials-fan or cheese-maniac, that is a good thing about Aramark – you can always find something that would fit you.

What can I do if I don’t want to eat at the server?

If you don't want to eat on campus, it is always possible to go to Vegesack to one of the cosy restaurants or cafés, grab a kebab or order a pizza from your room. Really, we don't leave in the middle of nowhere, the benefits of western civilization are always available for us, if you have money of course 

Is there any way to get in contact with Aramark?

Yes, indeed. There is the food committee which is the responsible link between students and Aramark, or you can fill in a form with a suggestion or a complaint that can always be found in any of the serveries.

Is food available all the time?

No, not always – there are set time slots for three main meals. Usually, a breakfast is from 7:15 to 9:45, lunch is from 12:00 to 14:00, and a dinner is from 18:00 to 20:00. On Sundays or state holidays, there is a brunch from 10:00 till 13:00. However if you missed any of these times for whatever reason there is the Pulse open from 19.00 to 1.00 where you can buy pizza, burgers or any kind of snack you can imagine.

Is there anything that keeps me from the work stress?

In general the work load is never too bad to get majorly stressed, yet during finals you can easily feel like everything is getting too much for you to handle. But exactly for that the college offices came up with the idea of cheer ups. What is a cheer up? They are special nights during exam time where the college office shows movies, organize game nights and provide us with cookies, cake, pizza, drinks to cheer you up and distract you a bit from your stress.

What do you do on a Saturday night when you get bored and there is no party going on?

Normally there is always some sort of party going on on campus, yet it can happen that it is Saturday night and you have nothing to do. No reason to freak out. You could always go downtown but there are also various opportunities avalaible on campus. For example you and your friends could get some games from the college office and just book the C3 multimedia room, where you can screen movies on a big scale with an awesome sound system! The Multimedia room is also very popular among the sports fans as the room can be used to screen any game to watch with your friends.

I want to have a party, what can I do?

You feel like partying? Whether for your birthday or no special reason parties are always good. The most popular option is to rent the Blue Lounge. The Blue Lounge is a room in the SAC, which undergraduates can use for various occasions. Of course you have to provide your own drinks, food and music. Just fill in the necessary forms and the party can get started.

What is there to do on a sunny day?

Although it doesn’t look like it Bremen can have its really nice sunny days during spring and summer. You can go and play sports, such as beach volleyball on our own field, play tennis, rugby or football. A very popular option as well is to have a BBQ. Each college has its own BBQ facilities and after applying for it you can get started and it is a nice alternative to the Aramark food routine.

What can I do during my free time on campus?

Apart from using the sport facilities such as tennis , volleyball or the nearby swimming pool, you can join one of the many clubs the university has to offer.

Do I have to attend all club meetings? How many are there during a week?

No, it is not necessary to attend all meetings and the number of meetings per week depends on each club; usually there is one meeting per week.

Do I get any benefits from joining a club?

Yes, there are many benefits. The first one would be that you get to find out more about the certain domain which involves the club; another one would be that you get to know more people who share the same passion as you do; last but not least you can have fun and make new friends.

Are there any unofficial clubs?

All clubs are officially “accredited” by the university. In order for your club to be official, a formalised procedure might need to followed.

What should my contribution to a club be? What does a club contribute to me?

Your contribution to a club should be involvement. Attending regular meetings and bringing new ideas to the club should do. As for the club, it will help you enhance your knowledge, passion, etc.

Is it compulsory to have a laptop at Jacobs? Can I survive without a laptop?

No, it is not compulsory to have one. It is your choice, but you need a laptop for many things, it is difficult if you don’t have one. There are laptops in the library of the university which you can use, but they are not many and all of them are not available 24/7 of course. Theoretically, you can survive without a laptop, but it is highly recommended to have one as you need to communicate with others and do projects, homework and stuff. A lot of the things regarding to the course material and homework are posted on internet. So, practically-no way!

If my operating system collapsed, what should I do?

On campus, we have the IT Support, who are very kind and can try to recover all your lost information in case your system collapsed. This however would be only if you bought the laptop from the university and not if you bought it from external places.

Is it worth it to bring my own laptop?

This depends solely on you. The problem would be the warranty, which, usually cannot be applied in other countries. So, if you know you’ll take good care of your portable, it is ok to bring your own, but otherwise, it is recommended to get one from the university given the fact that the insurance covers everything except theft.

How about buying one from Germany?

You can even buy a laptop from Germany. There are good stores for electronics here in Bremen, for example Saturn. But of course there can be some disadvantages for some of you as well, like for example a German keyboard and German software (which you can reinstall in English of course).

Where can I buy additional stuff for my laptop (i.e. external hard drives, webcams, mice, keyboards, etc.)?

There are several places to get this kind of stuffone would be the MediaMarkt, at the Vegesack Mall, or if you want to compare prices and even more utilities, go to Bremen downtown at Saturn and you have plenty of things to choose from. OR, you can send a spam to Jacobs-students and eventually someone has something to sell and you can get it cheaper (even though second hand) from one of the other students and you don’t even have to go that far.

What kind of student clubs are there at Jacobs University?

How many student clubs can I join at a time?

As many as you like - there is no limit for the number of clubs that you join.

Is it mandatory to join at least one of the clubs?

No.

How often do we have to meet in the clubs?

Usually it depends on the club itself. Meeting schedules vary according to the different clubs.

Can I create a new club?

Yes, if you have a new idea, which is not yet covered by a student club or campus activity, you can certainly come up with a new club!

How many courses should I take?

For SES students around 10 courses (with labs).
For SSHS students I would recommend to take 6 to 7 courses, even if your academic adviser says that 5 should be fine. The more courses you take in your first 2 years the better, because you won't have to take many in your 3^rd year then.

What major should I choose?

Well, think about it twice and be sure what to take. You can change your major, but we would not recommend it. It just causes problems.

How many people should I expect in my classes?

This is something that varies. But most of the time the classes are not too crowded: something around 30 to 40 is normal. But there are also classes where you can have over 100 students and classes with only like 10 students. It often depends on the popularity of the course.

What other school electives should I take?

As SHSS student you should probably take first year courses in General Earth and Space Sciences or Biology (that is what most do). But in the end it is your choice. Do whatever pleases you most.
For SES students, it more or less does not matter. But don't forget: you will have to read a lot for them and study as for your normal courses.

Is it useful to study in study groups?

It depends in the person. You have to decide for yourself, but feel free to ask anyone for help. There are also tutorials, which are offered for several courses.
