Do I need a German health insurance?

Students in Germany are required to provide the university with a proof of a German public health insurance. Students who decide to keep their private insurance in Germany or any other country must apply for the dispensation of the obligation to insure and must provide the Registrar's Office with the appropriate proof of their private health insurance. For the EU students special regulations may apply.

When should I apply for health insurance?

It is recommended that students out of Germany apply for travel insurance covering the first two weeks of their stay. Jacobs University then provides students with the opportunity to apply for health insurance on campus, during orientation week.

Which health insurance is best for me?

Techniker Krankenkasse is the premium partner for the health insurance offered to students by the University. The TKK (Techniker Krankenkasse) has an office on campus. For further information on their offers, please check http://www.tk-online.de/centaurus/generator/tk-online.de/tk-online.de.html (unfortunately the link are only offered in German). Further information can also be obtained by emailing them.

What the amount charged by the health insurance companies?

The total payable amount for a health insurance (around €58) covers both the health insurance costs and the compulsory nursing care.

Can I be exempted from health insurance?

"Students shall not be subject to compulsory insurance if they are insured as members of the family in statutory health insurance of their parents or spouse; the same shall apply for nursing care insurance." (Cited from the TKK information leaflet)
